چکیده

Direct noninvasive assessment of the characteristics of coronary atherosclerotic plaques is important to improve cardiovascular risk stratification and to monitor the course of coronary artery disease. Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) has become an effective tool for noninvasive evaluation of coronary artery calcium and plaque components. Using CCTA, atherosclerotic plaques can be divided into calcified and non-calcified sub-types based on density measurements. Noncalcified plaques (NCP) consist of fibrotic, fibro-fatty and necrotic subtypes. Accurate detection and quantification of atherosclerotic plaques-both calcified and noncalcified-are needed to improve risk stratification and monitor the progression or regression of the disease. Compared to calcified plaques (CP), NCPs are associated with increased risk of acute coronary syndromes. The prevalence of NCP identified by CCTA is not relatively low in asymptomatic patients without coronary artery calcium. However, clinical risk factors and prognostic significance of NCP in asymptomatic patients without coronary artery calcium are not well known. Editorial

Application of 64-slice spiral computed tomography angiography in a follow-up evaluation after coronary stent implantation: A Chinese clinical study

Background: This study assessed the application value of 64-slice spiral computed tomography angiography (CTA) in a follow-up evaluation of patients receiving coronary stent implantation. Materials and Methods: A total of 468 patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) at our hospital between January 2013 and October 2016 were selected for this study. Coronary angiography an...

The prevalence and extent of coronary atherosclerosis among patients with a zero calcium score and the influence of patient characteristics.

PURPOSE Coronary artery calcium (CAC) is a specific indicator of and an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis; however, calcium scoring may miss noncalcified plaques, which may have clinical importance. The aim of this study was both to identify the presence and extent of coronary plaques during computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) in patients with a zero CAC score and to evalu...

Soluble CD163, a novel marker of activated macrophages, is elevated and associated with noncalcified coronary plaque in HIV-infected patients.

BACKGROUND Pro-inflammatory monocytes/macrophages may contribute to increased atherosclerosis in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. We investigate--to our knowledge, for the first time--sCD163 and other markers of monocyte activation in relationship to atherosclerotic plaque in HIV-infected patients. METHODS One hundred two HIV-infected and 41 HIV-seronegative men with equi...

Noninvasive evaluation with multislice computed tomography in suspected acute coronary syndrome: plaque morphology on multislice computed tomography versus coronary calcium score.

OBJECTIVES Our aim was to evaluate the atherosclerotic plaque burden and morphology as determined by 64-slice multislice computed tomography (MSCT) coronary angiography in relation to the calcium score in patients presenting with suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS). BACKGROUND The absence of coronary calcium during coronary calcium scoring has been proposed to rule out significant coronar...

The Emerging Roles of Coronary Computed Tomographic Angiography: Acute Chest Pain Evaluation and Screening for Asymptomatic Individuals.

UNLABELLED Coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) has been widely available since 2004. After that, the diagnostic accuracy of CCTA has been extensively validated with invasive coronary angiography for detection of coronary arterial stenosis. In this paper, we reviewed the updated evidence of the role of CCTA in both scenarios including acute chest pain and screening in asymptomatic a...
